Viewing Album:  The "Big Apple" Among the Last of Their Kind

Album Info:This is a series of photographs taken by and of my father, J. Lloyd Kinney in 1943. The Central of Georgia had just purchased eight 4-8-4 Locomotives from the Lima Locomotive Works to replace their 4-8-2 models. They were numbered 451-458. These pictures are of engine number 452. Other companies, including ALCO built locomotives of this type and they were used by many other railroads. These were among the last steam engines built in the U.S. Some called them "Northerns" other railroads by other names but on the C of G they were called "Big apples" or "Big A's". In some of the information I have, Dad referred to them as "Gotham" locomotives. I don't find that reference elsewhere. All eight "Big Apples" were retired from service in 1953 and sadly, all were scrapped.
